Hometown Celebration #5: Pub Pumpkins

A not-too-scary arrangement of Jack-o-Lanterns and pumpkins line the passage from the Main Street promenade back to Shanachie's Pub. This carved-out variety of winter squash has long been a traditional decoration at American homes on this day. Happy Halloween!

Love your little pumpkin parade. Wish I had some easy-to-carve American-style pumpkins! All they have here are the hard, thick-fleshed pumpkins that are wonderful for pies, but so hard to carve with a knife...need a chainsaw....hmmm....where's that guy from the movie...?

Oh Elaine, I just love the way you frame a shot. This is gorgeous.

Happy Halloween, my kindred spirit up north!

they look like notes on a scale. or maybe like a Magritte painting, weirdly suspended in the air.
Well done you, and happy Halloween!

It is almost as if the ledges were created for exactly this purpose! Great perspective!

Now this is my style - non-scary pumpkins. How beautifully this decorates the passage way. Love it.

In Scotland, they carve turnips! I guess you use what you have. :)

Happy Halloween!!!!

Beautiful job framing the photo and a lovely conceit that someone took a lot of time creating. You're making me fall in love with Willits.

I love the angle you chose for the pumpkins, E. Happy Halloween!

I see that not all of them are carved. Are they approaching it like an advent calendar? A carving a day until Hallows Eve? I need to make a candy run.

Greetings all, from a dark and stormy night in Willits! The wind and rain kicked up tonight, so only the afternoon door to door goblins had a safe and comfortable trick-or-treating time. So I still have plenty of individually wrapped, snack sized Hershey's chocolate bars to munch on for a while.

A few notes:

Bibi - Shhh! That chainsaw idea is just the sort of thing some people would embrace around here!

Kelly - In fact, they only screw on these shelves for special occasions. It's a pretty narrow passage.

Halcyon - Turnips?!

Kym - I'm doing my best to get you down here. 6^) Hey, I heard the Benbow Inn is up for sale! True?

PA - You crack me up!

Thanks for all your kind greetings. Tomorrow is Theme Day, and the gallery opening reception for the Willits Photo Club show. I'll bring some of that on Sunday or Monday, if I get any usable shots.

BOO!

Missed this yesterday, but glad I've finally seen it. A creative way to find a pub...better than bread crumbs!

Read Babooshka's Ramsey Daily Photo 10/31 entry for a great explanation of what turnips have to do with Halloween.
