Vacant Service Station Entrance

I have long had fantasies of redeveloping vacant buildings in various communities I've lived in, or even just passed by. This is just part of a former vehicular service complex with sort of 1950's "modern" styling, right in the center of town on Main Street. An arts and crafts complex? Alternative power vehicle sales and demonstrations? A new home for the community theater? An International Youth Hostel? All I need is the money, because dreams, I have buckets full.

I think it would make a great travel agency, with cruises around the Sth Pacific the opening special????

I have the same feelings - my wife is a painter and into her art and craft in a big way... I would open a part photo gallery/part art/craft shop.

There are lots of things that could go into these old used buildings and some of them are not occupied because the cost of bringing them back up to local codes is prohibitive. So they set empty and are eventually burned for insurance money or are demolished as eyesores. Shameful. I don't think America will ever have a building standing that is 650 years old like some churches in Europe and even older in Asia.

If I don't get back to see you again before the weekend, I will wish you a "Happy Decoration Day" weekend. Alas, now called 'Memorial Day' weekend; and, better known for the Indianapolis 500 race than for decorating the graves of the dead.

You have a lot of great ideas. I think the same thing when I see empty store fronts in our town. Maybe someday....

Often redeveloping a vacant gasoline station presents significant cost to remove the underground tanks and cleanup any spilt fuel ... However, I have seen some refurbished and I admire those who have taken on the task.

Thank you for registering at the Daily Photo Map. A thumbnail of your latest photo now appears on the map.

Isn't it too bad to see a vacant service station in this condition. I saw many in worse condition and they are still using it in my city. Interesting post.

Jules - a travel agency sounds great! Maybe combine that with the youth hostel? I am so on your cruise!

Craig - it would have high visibility for passersby, and lots of natural light.

Abraham - I've seen some fine buildings fall too.

Jim - maybe someday is right.

Denton - yes, I would need not just money, but lots and lots of money.

iBlowfish - this is definitely in the running for reuse.

Magiceye - We need an Indian restaurant in this town; I'll add it to my mental list.

uselaine, you've found a fantastic use for this building by photographing it. I think this is one of your best. The repetitions of reds, window panes, signs, shadows and lines make for such a sweet/sad mood. I can hardly take my eyes off it.
