Sheriff's Posse
This beautiful Appaloosa rump carries one of the Mendocino Sheriff's Search and Rescue Horse Posse members. That bay roan is a beauty as well. I wasn't much aware of this all volunteer organization until I looked them up on the internet for this post. When someone is missing in the vast hills and forests, rivers and lakes, these are the regular folks who are called up to put their skills to work. And just yesterday, Pasadena Daily Photo posted a photo and story about search and rescue training going on down in that city - check it out!
I caught Sheriff Tom Allman blinking there - sorry Sheriff.

Handsome horses and brave riders. "Horse posse"--wow, posse is really used outside of Western movies?!
Gosh. What a nice group to have around when you need them. I love horses so this is my favorite.

So that's what Appaloosas and bays look like. I only read descriptions like that in books and I could never visualize it.
Those horses are magnificent. And the idea of the volunteer search and rescue is magnificent as well.
It reminded me "Lucky Look" cartoon. Nice photos.
A good-looking bunch of people and animals. The sheriff can blink all he wants.
Dina - I picked it up from their website, since I didn't know they used that term these days too!
Abraham - We are lucky, especially in some of the wild terrain we have around here.
Hilda - I hope you'll click on the "horse colors" link in the mini-horse post. It explains a lot about the colors, with at least a few pictures. The one on the right here is a bay roan, which means the reddish-brown body has white hairs mixed in. The horse with the sheriff on is a true bay. I'll bet a search on Google Images will give you a taste of the variety of Appaloosas too.
KG - I didn't realize they were all volunteers either, until I looked it up.
Meead - I don't know about "Lucky Look"! I'll have to do some research.
Petrea - Thank you. Next time I see him, I'll tell him you said so. 8^)
