Red and Re-Read

This flashy display expressed the red-hot July we have had with our fires and often soaring temperatures. The Book Juggler sells used books, sheet music, DVDs, and guitar strings in addition to three rooms packed with tomes needing a new home.

I found a book in the back room written by a professor I much admired, Walter Capps, called "The Unfinished War: Vietnam and the American Conscience". I took his class, bearing approximately the same title, in about 1982 at UCSB, which was later featured in a 60 Minutes (news magazine TV show) segment by Ed Bradley. Capps was a religious studies professor, and it shaped his approach to current affairs. It was the only college class I had that could move me to tears. He was later elected to Congress, but sadly died of a heart attack in his first term. He was very wise, and attuned to the experiences and needs of our veterans. We sure could use him now.

Have you mentioned Capps before or have I read of him elsewhere? He rings a large bell.

Your photo is like candy. Delectable, tempting and sweet. Maybe even bad for me, in a good way.

Sara - Wow! I have read some things about the Hajj, and the city's connection with the Prophet, but that's all. I'm sure it will be a beautiful experience for you. It must be very hot in Mecca now too! Have a safe journey.

Petrea - I don't think I have mentioned him on the blog(s) before, but he certainly has come to mind in the last eight years. His widow, Lois Capps, now fills the congressional seat he had.

Lily (and P) - It's the sort of enticement that is okay to succumb to, especially at used book prices.

Thank you for your visits!

AHhhhhh... bookstores! My downfall! What a great display.

I've been meaning to read something by Capps. It was so sad when he died. I remember Jesse Jackson went to his funeral.

Love your blog!

Ming - They did a nice job. Most window displays are hard to photograph here, with too much reflection going on, but I could get this from the side.

Laurie - Thanks so much for visiting. It sounds like you may have spent some time around Santa Barbara, as I did. He often quoted the monk, Thomas Merton, whom he had met. I also took his class about the Religious Right emerging in politics. We heard guest lectures from both extremes, such as Paul Weyrich and Cal Thomas on the right, to Jerry Brown and George McGovern on the left. I was overseas (in the Peace Corps) when Capps died, and didn't find out about it until I was browsing through some old newsmagazines when I got home.

Sara N. - Will you be gone very long? I guess Meead will continue the Mashhad blog while you are away. I look forward to hearing about it.

I like the display. I've never seen a bookseller arrange their wares by color. Interesting idea!
