February Theme Day: Paths and Passages

In yesterday's post, I mentioned three paths, and these are the other two. Here at the northernmost point in Little Lake Valley, the Northwestern Pacific Railroad crosses Outlet Creek through the gap in the hills. Alongside runs Highway 101, also crossing the creek via a bridge, and upon which I ventured on foot to risk getting yesterday's shot. Writing this, I realize I haven't made the passage out of the valley, in this direction, in probably two years. The trains no longer pass here, and it won't be long before the water below dries up too.

The first day of each month is always Theme Day among the hundreds of City Daily Photo Bloggers worldwide. Click here to view thumbnails and links for all those participants, and enjoy their interpretations of the theme.

Ah, so original. Train tracks and how pretty they are. I never thought I'd say that. I love the detail and gleam on the tracks. So many old train tracks in America aren't used now.

I think from all your photos this is my very very favourite.
So timeless...

The materials and textures on the tracks really make this shot, and the curve at the end is perfect

I have afeeling in 1979 I went to Willits on a train from ....errrr...Mendocino perhaps? Would that have been right?

The super highway of the iron horse. Nice photograph.

I wrote in my Memories blog about the roads of my youth and how they were to travel in the winter time.

Have you noticed some great photography of train tracks can only occur when they are more or less defunct. The theme days always belie a little of our personality.

What beautiful old tracks. A step back in time!

I wondered if you were playing chicken with the trains. I guess not. This is a beautiful shot and a sad story.

When I see tracks I always wonder about the people that rode on them years ago. What stories they had and where they were going.

Jilly - We are losing a valuable system of infrastructure, bit by bit, it's true.

Hyde - Unfortunately the wet is from condensation on the cold steel, not from rain.

Rose - Thank you!

Ham - It's been at least a decade since these rails have been used.

Sally - Cool! That means you rode the Skunk train from Ft Bragg to Willits! It's a different rail line, but very, very close.

Abe - And it's side by side with the truckers highway of today.

Babooshka - It's true, the industrial decay here mirrors my own. I'll be half a century old this month. 6^)

Saretta - I think it's those metal mounting plates on the bridge that make it different.

Petrea - My short walk along this section revealed some badly needed maintenance requirements. It would be hugely expensive to get this railroad working again.

Jim - I've heard stories about how beautiful the passenger trips were, especially along the Eel River Canyon further north.

Gorgeous, Elaine. And poetic and melancholy, too!

Laurie - Melancholy is the word, all right. So much potential is now wasting away.

Railway tracks are often great material for photos as they appeal to the imagination. Very nice shot.

Taken from this perspective the tracks actually look like they are going downhill a little too steeply. I am assuming it is an optical illusional made by the surrounding landscape?

Good choice for the theme day! I like this passage.
